The Making of a Rose

While I've been off "fishing" I've been spending a lot of time painting.
I think I have painted more this past week than all of last year combined. It's been fun and I thought I would share with you the process involved in creating a watercolor painting.

First I take my "block" or pad of paper and lightly sketch what I want to paint.

Second I use a kneaded eraser and blot it over the drawing to make the pencil lines lighter.  This is a matter of personal preference, not all artists do this step.

For this painting of a pink rose, I first laid down a wash of a light pink.  I use tube paint (watercolor is also available in "pan" form like the watercolor sets you were used to using as a child.)

Next I start working on alternating petals (you can't work next to a section that is still wet as the paint will bleed into a wet area.)  To speed up the process, I sometimes will use a blowdryer to dry the wet areas.

Now you can see the flower developing.  I have yet to do the center here.
A little trick I learned from my SIL is to work in standard sizes (5x7, 8x10 etc.) so that you can get readymade frames and mats to cut the cost of framing your work.

And here is the completed rose.  I did this a little backwards of how I'm used to working.  I usually do the background first and then the main focus of the painting.   When I started this rose, I wasn't sure what kind of background I wanted.

note: the finished painting is 8x10 without frame and matting.

I hope you learned something and enjoyed seeing a painting come to life.
I'm off to do more painting.  TTFN

I'm in complete awe of your talent Bridget!! It was so interesting to see the process to. I've never been good at art but I decided my art creative outlet involves textures, i.e., fabric and wood, LOL! You're amazing! Do you ever paint beaches, the ocean, or sunsets? I guess it's a good thing I haven't seen them if you do bz I'm really longing to see the ocean again and sit on a beach!

Justine, is that what's coming out of my ears? I was going to see a doctor about that! LOL

Diane, Thank you for the compliment. I would need to build up some stock before I could attempt to sell any and so far, I have given away most of what I've painted except for a couple of my first works that I have hanging in my own home. If I stay on this "fishing trip" I might be able to lay in some stock and consider that possibility.

Robyn, I agree it is not quite as easy as it looks but once you learn the basics, it is not as hard as you might think.

Mama, Vanni is such a good sport to carry your goodies all the way across the pond for you. That boy is a keeper!
My new rose would be delighted to hang in your home, we'll talk. ; )

Jill, Who said the "fishing trip" was over? lol I'm just popping my head in for a quick visit. I will post as the blog spirit moves me but not full time just yet.

Santamaker, Thank you, it has been really nice to focus on my art for a while. I also have some quilting that is calling my name. This "fishing trip" is bound to be extended for a while yet.

Dawnie, Thank you, if I have anything worthy, I'll post more painting photos.

Sally, It was hiding behind my blogging obsession. lol

Bee, Thank you, you are too kind!

Cindy, I'm glad you liked seeing the process. I owe this post to Schmecky, she suggest a while ago that I just do a post like this. As far as oceans and sunsets, I've been tempted but I am still learning and so far, flowers are my comfort zone but it is about time to branch out because I don't know if I can do any more flowers without losing my mind. lol

To everyone, thank you for your kind words. I was not "fishing" for compliments but they are greatly appreciated. I love you all!

OMG! It's gorgeous!!! I love it! It came out beautiful! You are soooooo talented. Thanks for sharing the process with us. It was interesting.

I thought of you yesterday. I was in Borders. They had a huge book called Ultimate Roses and I thought I remembered you had it. I wanted to buy it for you but since I thought you had it already I didn't. It probably would have cost me a million to ship it because it was so freakin heavy! Is that the book you have?

Hi Bridget...I looked intently at this beautiful painting & didn't see your signature anywhere...
something that beautiful & real looking NEEDS to be signed by the artist or else some scoundrel like me might claim I did it! It is just perfect! ;-) Bo

Bridget said...

Schmecky, nope I do not have that book and you're right, it would cost a bundle to ship it. I'll have to look for it on Amazon though, I get free shipping from them!

Bo, good point. I did sign the piece after I took the picture for the blog but I guess I should copyright it or something. If you sell it to hallmark, I want a commission! LOL

Wow! You are one talented lady! I have no ability whatsoever to draw or paint. It was amazing to see your steps evolve into a beautiful, lifelike rose! I'm so impressed with your talents.

Thank you for stopping by my blog today. I do think age helps with the confidence to compliment someone without feeling silly. I have instilled this in my daugthers too and now we enjoy sharing opportunities to "make someone's day" with a sincere sompliment.

I do hope you'll stop by and see me again!

I'm so glad you popped in! THere are 648 comments now for people trying to win the machine so my chances are getting slimmer and slimmer but I still dare to dream! LOL! Actually I don't know anything about Janome machines and am currently lusting after a Bernina. My Bernette was only meant as a stepping stone as the store in town will give me credit for the full purchase price toward a new machine within a year. The hard part is that I have to pay the extra for the Bernina. We'll see what happens by the end of the year (end of April is my year mark). Life will still go on if I can't bz I have some other priorities that have to come first! Thanks for rooting for me too. You're right too, I've found a few pretty fun quilting blogs. I love to look and get ideas, just wish I had more time and moolah to actually do it! If I can just get through the summer then I'll be saying that I have too much time to quilt and that I'm getting lonely, LOL! Take care, and thanks again for stopping by!

Hi again! I'm so tickled that you stopped by my blog again. I must blog again tomorrow.

No, I have never done RMS. It does seem to be very popular among bloggers. I guess I never felt like any of my rooms were totally finished enough to have anyone "rate" me! lol! We have a fairly new home, and I'm still tweeking here and there.

Are you on RMS? I need to go over and check it out again now that I know a lot of names of people.

Hope your week is a good one!

(Haven't been on line all that much.....SPRING is finally here!!!!!!!!!!! Still have a few mounds of snow though. Alas, we can finally open up ALL our windows without feeling like we are heating the outside.)

What can I say that hasn't been already been said about your artistic talent? Hmmmmmmm, ditto, ditto, ditto etc. etc.

JUST BEAUTIUFL BRIDGET!

Do you ever use the watercolor pencils? (Jamieson uses them a lot in his Fashion Sketching for finer details.)
